Seeds, bees, worms and how plants grow: 5 facts for kids

Seeds sprout, bees carry pollen, worms loosen the soil: living things help each other along. The living-things cards turn up on every island too: your child meets them while planting seeds, digging, harvesting, helping plants grow or walking past flowers. How a seed sprouts, how bees help flowers make seeds, which part of a plant we eat, how worms loosen the soil, and what a plant needs to grow.

01

Sprouting seeds

A seed holds a tiny baby plant and its own packed lunch of food. With water, air and the right warmth, it swells up, sends a root down first, then a shoot up.

Bees and flowers

Bees crawl into flowers to sip nectar and get dusted with pollen. When they visit the next flower they carry the pollen along, helping the plant make fruit and seeds. This is called pollination.

Plant parts we eat

A carrot is a root, a berry is a fruit, lettuce is leaves and a potato is a stem that grows underground. The fruit and vegetables we eat come from different parts of plants.

Earthworms

Earthworms tunnel through the soil, opening little paths for air and rain to soak in. They eat dead leaves and soil, and their droppings are rich food for plants. Wormy soil grows healthier plants.

What plants need

Plants need sunlight, water, air and nutrients from the soil. Leaves use sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide from the air into food, giving off the oxygen we breathe. This is photosynthesis.
