New Zealand school years by age: Year 1 to Year 13
In short: New Zealand schooling runs from Year 1 at primary school to Year 13 at secondary school. A quick rule of thumb: NZ Year N is roughly US Grade N − 1 — Year 2 ≈ Grade 1, Year 7 ≈ Grade 6, Year 11 ≈ Grade 10. Start dates and school years differ, so treat it as a rough guide.

Parents ask
What is Year 0?
Many schools put children who start later in the year into Year 0 first, then move them to Year 1 the following year, so classmates are closer in age. Each school decides how it does this.
Why can children in the same Year be almost a year apart in age?
In New Zealand children can start school on their 5th birthday rather than at the start of a school year, so one Year group mixes early and late starters. The school year also runs from February to December, about half a year out of step with a September start.
My child is moving from overseas — which Year will they join?
Usually by age rather than by the grade they finished overseas; the school then looks at the child (including their English) and makes the final call.
What is NCEA?
NCEA is New Zealand’s national secondary school qualification: Levels 1 to 3 are usually taken in Years 11 to 13, and strong Year 13 students can also sit NZ Scholarship. The government has announced reforms to secondary qualifications over the next few years, so check with your school for the latest.
How Mochi Isle’s levels line up
Each subject in Mochi Isle has its own ladder: Starter levels 1–3 for children aged about 5 to 9, then eight rungs — Rung 1 is about NZ Year 7, each rung is one Year higher, Rung 7 is about Year 13 and Rung 8 reaches NZ Scholarship. A quick placement on the first visit puts each subject on the right step.
